Public Transportation

Public Transportation is the best option for reaching National Mall and Memorial Park sites easily and conveniently. There are many options to reach us via Washington, DC’s Subway system known as Metro, or bicycle via Capital Bikeshare. The National Mall Circulator Loop bus will provide easy access around the National Mall and convenient connections to other Circulator buses for visits to uptown sites. Trains including Amtrak, MARC, and VRE service Union Station and/or L’Enfant Plaza in Washington, D.C. If you have questions about accessibility or if you require assistance, please contact us.

Parking is limited in the area of the Lincoln Memorial. We strongly recommend attendees use the Metro System Foggy Bottom Metro Station providing service for the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines or the People Circulator.

Directions from the Foggy Bottom Metro Station to Lincoln Memorial:

  1. Exit station through FOGGY BOTTOM METRO STATION entrance.
  2. Walk approx. 7 blocks S on 23rd St NW.
  3. Turn right on Lincoln Memorial Circle SW.
  4. Walk a short distance W on Lincoln Memorial Circle SW.

By Car

Interstate 395 provides access to the Mall from the South. Interstate 495, New York Avenue, Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, and the Cabin John Parkway provide access from the North. Interstate 66, U.S. Routes 50 and 29 provide access from the West. U.S. Routes 50, 1, and 4 provide access from the East.

Parking

General visitor parking is available along Ohio Drive, SW between the Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Memorials. Bus parking is available primarily along Ohio Drive, SW near the Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Memorials and along Ohio Drive, SW in East Potomac Park. Handicapped parking is located on the south side of the Lincoln Memorial.

From the Metropolitan Washington DC area, we strongly recommend attendees use the Green Line on the Metro Line mass transit.

Directions from the Shaw-Howard Univ. Metro Station – Green Line

  1. Exit the Shaw-Howard U. Metro station from the 7th Street/Georgia Avenue entrance.
  2. Turn right/north and proceed approximately six blocks until you have reached the main campus of Howard University. View Washington area Metro Subway Map

By Car

Directions to Howard University from Maryland – Traveling West

Take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (I-295) to New York Avenue (R-50). Take New York Avenue to Florida Avenue and turn right. Take Florida Avenue to Georgia Avenue and turn right. Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately four blocks) and turn right. You are now on the campus of Howard University.

From Maryland – Traveling South

Take I-95 to I-495 (Silver Spring). Take I-495 to Georgia Avenue (Silver Spring). Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately seven miles). Turn left. You are now on the campus of Howard University.

From Maryland – Traveling North

Following I-295 North across the 11th Street Bridge. Go through tunnel (I-395 North) to the 3rd Street Tunnel. Take the 3rd Street Tunnel to Massachusetts Avenue exit. (You will actually be on New Jersey Avenue not Massachusetts Avenue.) Take New Jersey Avenue to Florida Avenue and turn left. Take Florida Avenue to Georgia Avenue (approximately three blocks) and turn right. Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately four blocks) and turn right. You are now on the campus of Howard University.

From Virginia – Traveling East

Follow Shirley Highway (I-395) East through the 3rd Street Tunnel (I-395 North) to the Massachusetts Avenue exit. (You will actually be on New Jersey Avenue not Massachusetts Avenue.) Take New Jersey Avenue to Florida Avenue and turn left. Take Florida Avenue to Georgia Avenue (approximately three blocks) and turn right. Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately four blocks) and turn right. You are now on the Campus of Howard University.

OR

Take I-66 East across the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge to Constitution Avenue. Take Constitution Avenue (23rd Street is at the end of the bridge) to 7th Street and turn left. (At Florida Avenue, 7th Street becomes Georgia Avenue.). Take Georgia Avenue to Howard Place (approximately four blocks) and turn right. You are now on the campus of Howard University.

From Virginia – Traveling North

Take I-95 to I-395 to the 12th Street exit. Turn right onto Constitution Avenue. Follow Constitution Avenue to 7th Street and turn left. Follow 7th Street (at Florida Avenue, 7th street becomes Georgia Avenue) to Howard Place (approximately four blocks from Florida Avenue) and turn right. You are now on the campus of Howard University.
