For far too long, we (education leaders, students and advocates) have been, banging the gong or, in some cases, hiding in the bushes. This session represents a homecoming as we begin to delve into the important and ongoing work of evolving humanity, building community, and honoring and educating our children. This workshop addresses the core problems facing American education today, identifies the power players, and provides solutions to advancing the cause for children and a meaningful and equitable education. Participants can expect to learn strategies for building alliances, strengthening messaging, utilizing the media, engaging communities, and developing effective action plans.

School Re-segregation and Border Crossing in the Classroom – Friday, 2:15-3:45

Recent research has shown us that school desegregation and education equity policies are not effective alone. Teachers and school administration need conversational tools and practice speaking about issues of race, class, and cultural difference to effectively seize critically instructive moments with students. This workshop seeks to leverage the collective knowledge of the group to forefront, dissect and reframe the role of race in elementary classrooms. It is not a lecture or a presentation – participants will engage in interactive adult learning techniques to: Discuss the role of race in our lives as a group, Share personal experiences of critical moments with students,

Develop strategies for confidently and effectively entering into equity-centered conversations about race in the classroom, and Practice using developmentally appropriate language and responses to comfortably handle even the toughest scenarios.

Organize to Overhaul Testing and Accountability Friday, 2:15-3:45

This interactive workshop will focus on presenting, discussing and developing ideas on organizing for assessment and accountability reform. Initial organizing ideas we will consider include: using the National Resolution on High-Stakes Testing; ways to educate and involve various communities; opt-outs and boycotts; use of media; “bird-dogging” electoral candidates; informing and persuading legislators and policymakers. Each topic will be presented briefly, then discussed. We will assume understanding of problems with high-stakes testing and discuss them in relation to the organizing efforts (e.g., when to focus on specific issues). Materials relevant to these topics are available at FairTest.org

Whose voices should be included in it? We seek children, parents, grandparents, primary caregivers, teachers, teaching assistants, PTAs/PTOs, principals, assistant principals, administrative staff, superintendents, school bus drivers, maintenance staff, cafeteria workers, paraprofessionals, professors, researchers, and any concerned citizen who wishes to volunteer to represent the diverse range of school communities. This workshop will examine how subsidies to private schools through vouchers or tax credits in fact corrupt quality education in science, history, and other aspects of a sound curriculum. It will also take a brief look at how charter schools–even though public entities in theory–have an unhealthy tendency to run schools along sectarian lines.

Opt Out. Dangerous Pedagogy: Teacher Education Challenging HST, VAMs, Common Core, Choice, and Turnarounds – Friday, 4:00-5:30

This workshop will focus on the definition of high stakes testing, its relationship to market based reform, its negative impact on public education, and how to engage in the various degrees of opting out of high stakes testing.

School Diversity 101: Building a Movement for Racial and Socioeconomic Integration – Friday, 4:00-5:30
Workshop Presenter: National Coalition on School Diversity (NCSD)

Members of the NCSD will provide an overview of their advocacy efforts, discuss the research that demonstrates a need for increased racial and socioeconomic integration in American schools, provide examples of state and local efforts to promote diversity, and share their perspectives on how conference participants can help support the movement to create quality, integrated schools. Attendees will learn about on-the-ground efforts to integrate from educators and leaders in Omaha, NE and New York, NY.

The Labor Workshop will begin with a panel of teacher union activists, including Michael Walker-Jones, Executive Director of the Louisiana Assoc. of Educators, Fred Klonsky, Chicago activist and former local union president of the Park Ridge Education Assoc., and Kristine Mayle, Treasurer of the Chicago Teachers Union. SOS Steering Committee members Mike Klonsky and Lee Barrios will moderate and act as respondents. The panel discussion will focus on hot-topic issues relating to the defense of teachers’ collective bargaining rights in the face of the current assault on unions. The discussion will be followed by a workshop discussion leading to an action plan for the coming year and a resolution to be adopted by the convention.

Rethinking Schools: Social Justice in Education – Saturday, 9:45-11:15

Rethinking Schools editors Helen Gym and Stan Karp will lead a discussion about teacher, parent, and community activism for social justice in education. They will share their experiences with national efforts like Rethinking Schools and the National Coalition of Education Activists and state/local efforts to create schools that serve communities well, fight racism and promote social justice. How can educators, youth, and parents create the policies and conditions that make social justice education possible? How can activism help sustain us inside our flawed educational institutions while we work to transform them? What lessons do past efforts to build activist coalitions hold for current possibilities? Bring your ideas and experiences for a discussion of ways to build the movement for educational justice.

Elevating Student Voices in Education – Sparking the Movement for OUR Future – Saturday, 9:45-11:15

Under the current system, students are increasingly unhappy with the corporate reformer’s demands. Months of their lives are spent either in test-prep or testing in a high-stakes system that is designed to fail every school in America. This top-down stress impacts students, while they are encouraged to go to college that is often not affordable, and to get a degree that will not necessarily lead to a career job. Many students are labeled failures, increasingly drop out, end up in minimum-wage jobs, or become victims of the school-to-prison pipeline. This panel will tell you how you can join us to create a movement that will stop this corporate take-over of public education and lift the burden placed on all students via student activism and partnerships with all stakeholders.

This workshop will explore the strategies and tactics used by the corporate education reform advocates to sway some Minority community members to support their form of education reform.

We will explore the real civil rights violations that occur in districts faced with corporate education reform. Access to neighborhood schools of quality is but one of the serious issues of concern. When cities move from public education to what passes as such; communities change. Often citizens and Civil Rights Leaders are persuaded; children will be better served. How might this be? The speaker, with audience participation, will explore everything from the impact of choice on children of color to the impact on communities confronted with the loss of middle class jobs.

Why America’s Public Schools Are the Best Place for Kids: Facts Every Citizen Should Know and Strategies for Disseminating Them – Saturday, 2:45-4:15
Workshop Presenter: Dave F. Brown, Ed. D.

Attendees to this session will be given a short True/False quiz on 15 critical public education issues that address the progress and effectiveness of our public schools over the past half century—particularly recent successes. The questions are designed to provide participants with a comprehensive perspective on how U. S. public school graduates outshine other nations’. Attendees will hear details such as how high school graduation rates have soared over the past 50 years; how U. S. public school students have higher creativity scores than other nations’ students; and, how states with unionized teachers have better student test scores than students in non-unionized states. This is an interactive session in which attendees will exchange “quiz” responses with others, and be able to follow-up with more questions throughout the session. Those attending will also brainstorm strategies for disseminating these meaningful findings with community members, politicians, and the press in order to more accurately portray public school effectiveness.

What’s Wrong with “No Child Left Behind” and How You Can Lobby Congress to Overhaul it Now – Saturday, 2:45-4:15

This workshop begins by describing NCLB’s key policies, its false assumptions and harmful effects. Next, it describes how NCLB should be restructured: dramatically shift its emphasis from “tests and sanctions” to “helping schools improve,” especially by federal support for schools’ adoption of the common elements of successful school turnarounds. Then, the bulk of the workshop focuses on actually preparing you to lobby your Congressman’s or Senator’s office (or that of other public officials) to change NCLB (or other education laws at the state or local level.)

Naming Problems, Brainstorming Possibilities: Addressing Disproportionality in the Wake of NCLB/RTTT – Saturday, 2:45-4:15

This workshop will cite problems and brainstorm possibilities as it focuses on NCLB/RTTT and the resulting exacerbation of the disproportionality problem in public schools for too many youth identified as Black, Latino, and impoverished and the exacerbation of the inequity problem experienced by too many English Language Learners (ELLs) in public schools. The audience will participate in a 5-step collaborative problem–solving activity developed by Dr. Paul Gorski, scholar activist, and Founder of EdChange.org.
