Below is a list of videos to explain the movement against corporate education reform.  The videos listed under The Reality can help expose the myths and lies about America’s public schools that have been publicized in the media.  When you find yourself asking, “What can be done about this,” then you’ll want to look toward the videos listed under The Vision.  In this section, we strive to show what a good public education looks like, what good assessment looks like, and what democratic engagement looks like.

Formula for Success: Jeff Tuttle at TEDxABQED

Tuttle has taught at Monte Vista Elementary School for over 20 years, where he helped install and maintain services for families in need, such as a school-based food and clothing bank. He wants to improve education for everyone in New Mexico, and understands how current trends for accountability need additional consideration. Tuttle is a 2013 Golden Apple Award recipient. He will share ideas for curriculum improvement and teacher pay, accountability, and other conversations in education, which you can read more about at tomorrowtrees.com and librelibros.org. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Hearts and minds: Adam Heenan at TEDxWellsStreetED

How do educators win the hearts and minds of their students, especially those who are disenfranchised by the education system? Teacher Adam Heenan has found that engaging his students means personally investing time in learning about their lives and challenges and helping them actively address these. Here, he describes a teaching approach borrowed from community organizing and calls on teachers to re-visit the age-old question of, "for what do we teach?" Parent Power

Parent Power

The role of parents in leading efforts to improve their neighborhood schools is usually ignored in portrayals of school reform. PARENT POWER dramatically demonstrates how grassroots organizing generated school improvement on a citywide scale in the nation's largest school system. Through the voices of local parents, the 35-minute film chronicles three stages of effective parent organizing (1995 - 2010) across New York City's African American and Latino neighborhoods, clearly showing how parent power can be developed to leverage meaningful public school reform. Urban-based community groups looking for organizational inspiration and practical guidance to support, demand, and sustain reforms aimed at improving students' outcomes in their public schools will find PARENT POWER uplifting and dynamic. The story of what these organized parents have achieved presents a refreshing alternative to reforms that do little to address pervasive educational inequity.
