Since the early 1970s, analyses of nationally representative survey data have documented a persistent history of achievement differences, according to which Whites and especially east Asians enjoy relatively high average student performance while African Americans and some Hispanic subgroups experience relatively low average student performance. Moreover, children whose families are on the lower rungs of the social class ladder average far lower achievement and educational attainment levels than their wealthier counterparts.
